Mappa

It is one of the most significant expression of Romanesque architecture, and it preserves an important series of frescoes of the Byzantine school of Campania. It was built in the X century on the remains of the temple dedicated to Diana Tifatina. Corinthian capitals, columns and pavements were reused for the Basilica’s construction in 1072. The construction of the Basilica was the desire of the abbot Desiderio di Montecassino. The façade is preceeded from an ample porch with 5 arches, the side ones are ogive and the central one, the tallest, is a full-centre arch. All the arches have been realized with reused marble elements. The belfry has a base made of stone blocks, a frieze with decorations and openings on the second level. The church has a Basilica plan divided in three naves each one culminating in a semicircular apse. The columns that divide the naves have Corinthian capitals from the pre-existing temple of Diana and columns made of different marble qualities. Remarkable the frescoes with scenes from the Old and the New Testament.
