The Amphitheatre in S. Maria Capua Vetere, the second biggest amphitheatre of ancient Italy, after the Colosseum, was built between the I and II century A.C., probably on the ruins of a similar structure. Inaugurated in 155 A.C. by Antonino Pio, it was destroyed, first by the Vandals, than by the Saracens and used as a fortress by the Longobard princes of Capua.
