The Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia stands at the beginning of the town, in the locality called “Gregaria” that was once a meeting place for the shepherds. It was commissioned by St. Pio: the works started in 1926 and lasted over twenty years. The consecration was made on May 19, 1951. The wide façade imitates the Romanesque style with ornaments in regular limestone quoins, a rose window and a flat belfry. The portal is preceded by two columns, sustaining a porch that has, at the bottom, a lunette with a mosaic (1953), portraying Christ. The interior made up, by three naves divided by a pillar, shows a marble altar and a polychromatic mosaic portraying the Sacred Family, at the side of which stand two wooden statue. There are also some statues of saints, a wooden choir and a rich mosaic floor. In front of the church, there is a statue of Saint Francis and a monument dedicated to St. Pio. Next to the church, there is the Convent of the Capuchin, which hosts a small museum, preserving some objects of the Saint, like a cowl, a bloodstained tunic, and the Casa del Pellegrino (completed in 1991), named after Mary Pyle, a rich protestant, who converted to Christianity and lived side by side with St. Pio until she died and financed the construction of the premise, which welcomes the visitors of the Saint’s native town.
