The Sanctuary, originally a Benedictine abbey (maybe until the second half of the XVI century) was probably founded during the Longobard period. The 1785 chiesa di Santa Maria del Roseto, previously included among the sacred places of Melizzano, is reported in the territory of Solopaca. The natural disaster did not save the ancient monastic complex, already damaged by the negligence of Melizzano’s Feudatories and by the 1688 and 1805 earthquakes. The latter, in particular, dealt a heavy blow to what had remained of the ancient and glorious monastic complex: the church was severely damaged and the statue of the Madonna was brought elsewhere (it seems in the small church of S. Mauro) and only in 1844 it was brought back in procession to the Sanctuary. From that moment on, it started the tradition of bringing the Statue of the Madonna del Roseto from the monte delle Rose to Solopaca every first Monday of June and back to its mountain residence every first Monday of September. From the Sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage from all the surrounding towns, a wide panoramic view opens on the Valle del Calore.
Opening: SUN 16,00-20,00. MON-FRI on request. From the 1st Monday in June to the 1st Monday in September the Madonna is in town.
